Train communication between Rajshahi and other parts of the country was disrupted after the derailment of an oil-carrying train at Haldiagachi in Charghat Upazila of the district.

A Chapainawabganj-bound train from Pabna is carrying 30 oil tankers, of which nine went off track at the outer station of Sardaha road around 6:15 pm on Wednesday, halting movement on the route.

Jahidul Islam, station master of Rajshahi Railway Station, confirmed the information and said that one hour after the accident, railway authorities took the other 21 tankers to Harian station, an oil depot, where the train was scheduled to stop as it was transporting oil from Khulna.

Meanwhile, a rescue train reached the spot at 9:45 pm. However, bad weather disrupted the rescue operation. The rescue operation will depend on the rain, said rail sources.

After the incident, assistant executive engineer Abdur Rashid was suspended and a five-member committee was formed to investigate.
