Raihan murder: Another cop held

Another policeman named Harunur Rashid has been arrested in connection with the death of Raihan Ahmed at the Bandar Bazar police outpost in Sylhet. He was arrested from Sylhet Police Lines on Friday night.

Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Sylhet SP Muhammad Khaled-uz-Zaman confirmed the matter on Saturday afternoon.

Detainee Harunur Rashid was on duty as a constable at Bandar Bazar police outpost. He was suspended on October 13 following the death of Raihan by torture at the outpost.

“Harunur Rashid was arrested from Sylhet Police Lines last night. He will be taken to court today and will appeal for remand,” said SP Muhammad Khaled-uz-Zaman. 

The PBI has so far arrested two people in connection with the incident. Earlier, Constable Titu Chandra was arrested. He is currently on a five-day remand.

Raihan, son of Rafiqul Islam of Akhalia Neharipara of Sylhet, died at the Bandarbazar police outpost on Sunday morning. The victim's family claimed that the police had tortured Raihan to death in the outpost. However, police claimed that Raihan was beaten to death during a robbery in a wooded area of ​​the city.

Tahmina Akhter Tani, the wife of the deceased, filed a case with Sylhet Kotwali Model Police Station on Sunday night against unanimous in the case.

The case was transferred to PBI as per the police headquarters’ instructions. After receiving the case, the PBI team visited the Bandar Bazar police outpost, the wooded area of ​​the city and the victim’s house. Lastly, Raihan’s body was taken out of the grave and re-autopsied.

The autopsy report found 111 marks of injuries on the body of the deceased Raihan. Of these injuries, 96 were swollen injuries and 14 were signs of serious injuries. These injuries were caused by sticks. Raihan died of hypovolemic shock and neurogenic shock due to numerous injuries and loss of vital organs works including the brain, heart, lungs and kidneys.

Earlier, in-charge of Bandar Bazar police outpost Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, ASI Qutub, Constable Sajib and Titu Chandra were suspended in connection with Raihan’s murder on October 11 morning. Three more were also withdrawn.

Besides, Bandar Bazar police outpost-2 IC SI Hasan Uddin suspended on October 21 from the outpost for helping the ousted SI Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, the main accused in the incident, to escape from the outpost and concealing information.
