The verdict in the case filed over the 2015 murder of Jagriti Prokashony Publisher and blogger Foisal Arefin Dipon have been announced on Wednesday.
Judge Md Majibur Rahman of the Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal in Dhaka is set to deliver its judgment in the case.
Earlier on January 24, the same court set today for announcing the verdict after hearing the concluding arguments in the case.
The accused are - Syed Ziaul Haque Zia Moinul Hasan Shamim alias Samir alias Imran, head of the military wing of the banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam, Abdur Sabur Samad alias Sujan alias Raju alias Swad, Khairul Islam alias Jamil alias Jisan, Abu Siddique Sohel alias Shakib alias Sajid alias Shahab, Mozammel Hussain alias Saimon alias Shahriar, Sheikh Abdullah alias Jubayer alias Zayed alias Jabed alias Abu Omayer and Akram Hossain alias Hasib alias Abir alias Adnan alias Abdullah.
Six of the accused are now in jail while two of them - Syed Ziaul Haque Zia, and Akram Hossain alias Hasib – are still on the run.
In his argument, Special Public Prosecutor of the Tribunal Md Golam Sharuar Khan Jakir sought maximum punishment for all the accused in the case. He claimed that they successfully proved their points of arguments before the court.
However, the defence lawyers argued that the prosecution lawyers failed to prove charges brought against them. They hoped for the acquittal of his clients.
Dipon was hacked to death at his Aziz Super Market office on October 31, 2015. Later, his wife Dr Razia Rahman filed the murder case with Shahbagh police station on November 2, 2015, against unidentified assailants.
On October 13, 2019, the court framed charges against eight activists of banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam. A total of 22 out of 26 prosecution witnesses testified before the court in the case.
