Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that the process to extend the suspension of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s prison sentence is underway. The law ministry has already given its opinion for extending the suspension of her prison sentence.
The Minister came up with information on Thursday while talking to reporters at the secretariat in Dhaka.
Asked about the progress of Khaleda Zia's application for permanent release, the Home Minister said, "Khaleda Zia's younger brother came to us with an application. We sent it to the law ministry for due process."
Khaleda Zia, the 76-year-old former prime minister, had served 25 months out of 17 years of prison sentences in two graft cases, involving Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust, before she was released amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The government suspended the sentences of Khaleda twice before for six months each on the condition of receiving treatment at home and not abroad.
The government freed her following the family’s petition in March last year as the coronavirus pandemic spread across Bangladesh.
