Principal Gopal murder: Death penalty of 3 commuted to life term

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday has commuted the death sentence of three convicts to ‘life term imprisonment’ in the murder case of Chattogram principal Gopal Krishna Muhuri, which caused a stir across the country.
The three convict life term imprisonments are – Taslim Uddin alias Montu, Azam and Alamgir Kabir alias Baitta Alamgir.
A three-member Appellate Division bench headed by Senior Justice Iman Ali passed the verdict in a virtual court in the morning.
Senior lawyer Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain was present for the accused with Advocate Helal Uddin Mollah in the court.
Deputy Attorney General Amit Das Gupta confirmed the verdict to reporters.
In November 2001, Gopal Krishna Muhuri, principal of Nazirhat College, was shot dead at his residence in the Jamalkhan area of Chattogram. The killings caused a stir across the country.
In this case, on March 27, 2008, Chattogram Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Ekramul Haque Chowdhury sentenced four people to death and three others to life imprisonment.
