President M Abdul Hamid called upon the shipping authorities to be more careful and vigilant in ensuring the safety of the passengers including complying with the maritime law.

He made the call in a message given on the occasion of ‘Maritime Safety Week-2021’ on April 7.

The President welcomed the initiative of the Ministry of Shipping’s initiative to observe ‘Maritime Safety Week-2021’ from April 7 to 13 to ensure the safety of passengers on inland rivers.

The theme of this year’s Maritime Safety Week is ‘Safe waterway is the oath of Mujib Year’ is very timely, he also mentioned.

The President said the rivers, canals and haors are the ornaments of the eternal beauty of Ruposhi Bangla. There is no alternative to waterways and naval vessels for transporting passengers and goods in the remote areas of riverine Bangladesh.

“Even in this modern Bangladesh of the 21st century, the importance of rivers and boats has not diminished in any part but the importance of waterways as a comfortable, affordable and environmentally friendly medium is increasing day by day.”

He said the observance of Maritime Safety Week every year is a positive initiative as part of building a safer shipping system. The government is making every effort to build a modern shipping system. Excavation is being carried out with the help of ultramodern dredgers to keep the navigation smooth during the dry season.

Besides ensuring the safety and security of the passengers on the waterways, both the boat owners and the general people should be vigilant in protecting the river environment, said the President.

He called upon all concerned in the shipping sector to be more careful and vigilant in ensuring the safety of the passengers, especially during the Nor’wester season, with due diligence and compliance with the maritime laws.

“Everyone should pledge to build a safe and comfortable shipping system on the occasion of the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,” he said.

The President wished success to all the programs taken on the occasion of ‘Maritime Safety Week’.
