Andrew Balbirnie will be the new captain of Ireland’s Test and ODI team as William Porterfield decided to quit his long 11 years captaincy.

Porterfield took over the captaincy in 2008. He led the Ireland team against Pakistan in the debut Test on May 2018.

Porterfield led Ireland in 253 matches including two World Cups. The 35-year-old cricketer wants to move forward as a batsman despite having no captaincy.

Balbirnie said, “I feel honored to get the opportunity to lead my country. I’m so excited; we are going to start a very busy next year. This is a proud time for me, my family and all those involved with my cricket journey especially for my coaches, teammates, and friends at Pembroke Cricket Club.

Porterfield said that it was an extraordinary journey for me to lead the country for almost eleven and a half years. It’s a great honor for me. There were many ups and downs, but I certainly enjoyed the journey.

During this time, Porterfield assured that he will support Balbirnie in the field.

Balbirnie will start his journey as a captain from the ODI against the West Indies on January 7 next year.
