Police have recovered several local weapons, including a firearm, from the room of Saifur Rahman, who was involved in the gang-rape of a housewife after tying up her husband at Murari Chand (MC) College dormitory in Sylhet. 

A team of police of the city's Shahparan Police Station raided the new dormitory of the college around 2:00 am on Saturday. During the raid, a firearm, four long machetes, a knife and two GI pipes were recovered from Saifur's room. 

Meanwhile, after the incident, several teams of police have launched an operation to nab the accused in the gang-rape. However, the police could not arrest anyone accused in the incident till 8:30 am on Saturday. 

The news of gang-rape of a housewife by tying up her husband in the dormitory of the traditional college has provoked strong reactions among the people including students. Many have strongly condemned the heinous act on social media Facebook and demanded immediate arrest of the rapists. 

According to college sources, Saifur was staying in the dormitory illegally even though the college and dormitory were closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. He and his associates were allegedly involved in snatching, kidnapping and drug dealing in the college campus, Tilagarh and Baluchar areas. Saifur is also accused of holding regular gambling and drug parties in the dormitories at night. 

Shahporan Police Station OC Abdul Qayum Chowdhury said that police raided the MC College dormitory at night after the incident. Firearms, sharp weapons and knives were recovered from Saifur Rahman's room. 

Earlier on Friday evening, the couple from Shibbari area of ​​South Surma visited the MC College campus. At that time, Saifur and his associates - Rabiul, Tarek, Rony, Saifur, Mahfuj, and Arjun - took the woman and her husband to the nearby college hostel, where they tied up the husband and raped the woman. On information, police rescued the rape victim and her husband and sent the victim to the One-stop Crisis Centre at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
