Philippines Ambassador to Lebanon Bernardita Catalla

Philippines ambassador to Lebanon Bernardita Catallla died of coronavirus at the age of 62, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement on Thursday.

Philippine Foreign Ministry has issued a statement expressing deep grief over the death of Bernardita.

"with deep regret, that the Ambassador to Lebanon, Bernardita Catalla, died Thursday morning after suffering from COVID-I9." the statement said. 

Bernardita was staying in the Philippines amid Coronavirus risk. Recently, she tested positive for COVID-19. She was then admitted to a hospital in Beirut where she died on Thursday.

It is reported that Catalla served as the Consular General of the Philippines in Hong Kong before being appointed ambassador to Lebanon.

Catalla was a career diplomat for 27 years, according to the DFA. In December 2019, she led the “voluntary mass repatriation” program for the embassy in Beirut.

Her death is one of 16 coronavirus deaths reported in the country. A total of 494 people have contracted the virus so far in Lebanon.
