Payra Bridge to open this month

The much-awaited four-lane Payra Bridge in Lebukhali area of Barishal district will open to traffic in mid-October. In the meantime, 99 percent work of the project has been completed. Now the work of beautification is going on. The bridge will take the economy of the people of the south one step further.

The construction of Payra Bridge on Jatrabari-Mawa-Bhanga-Barishal-Patuakhali-Kuakata Highway started in 2016 at the cost of Tk1,448 crore. Of the total cost, Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and Apex Fund bear 82% of the expenditure. After completing all the work, the bridge will be opened to traffic in the middle of this month.

The 1,460-meter-long and 19.6-meter-wide Payra Bridge is being built over two abutments and 31 piers. Besides, there are 1,026 meters approach road, toll plaza, and administrative buildings.

Abdul Halim, project director of Payra Bridge, said most of the work on the bridge has been completed. Health monitoring and peer protection systems have been specially added to it which will signal any accident. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to inaugurate the bridge in the middle of this month. 

He added that the tourism industry in Kuakata would be further developed after the launch of the Payra Bridge. It will reduce the time to reach Kuakata beach from Dhaka. It will take only seven hours to reach the beach from Dhaka while two-and-a-half hours from Barishal.
