The Payra bridge over the Payra River in the Lebukhali area of Barishal district will be opened to traffic on Sunday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to inaugurate the four-lane bridge on Patuakhali-Barishal highway virtually from her official Gono Bhaban residence at 11:00 am.

The 1,460m long and 19.6m wide bridge is like another Padma Bridge for people of the southern region. It will be connected on both sides by cables. The bridge is 18.30m high from the water level. Seven km approach roads have been constructed on both sides of the bridge.

The Roads and Highways Department (RHD) undertook the Payra bridge project in 2012 as per the premier's commitment after she visited the area on February 25.

Later on March 19, 2013, the prime minister laid the foundation stone of Payra bridge.

The project was revised twice, the first in 2015 doubling the cost from the estimated cost of Tk 4.57 billion in 2012.

According to the RHD, the revision was needed as the soil level of the Payra river was found different from the one mentioned in the study.

Finally, the project cost was increased to Tk 14.47 billion for revising the design of the bridge having 19.75-metre width and 1.26-km approach road with extra dosed cable.

The Kuwaiti Fund for Arab Economic Development and the OPEC Fund for International Development have jointly funded the construction of the Longjian Road and Bridge Construction Bridge, a Chinese firm.
