Dhaka-bound passengers have flocked to Shimulia ghat in Louhajong upazila of Munshiganj on the news of the opening of the factory from Sunday, August 1.
Every ferry, packed with extra passengers, has been coming to Shimulia from Banglabazar Ghat in Madaripur since Saturday morning.
Passengers said “if they can’t return to Dhaka today, they won’t be able to join work.” As a result, they have left for Dhaka at risk to earn a living.
Kakoli Akhter, a garment worker, said she worked in a garment factory in Savar. “I heard from people that the factory will open from tomorrow. So, I have to return to Dhaka to join the workplace,” she added.
It was seen on the spot that the passengers were crowding in every ferry leaving from Banglabazar. The number of vehicles on the ferry is much less than the number of people, neglecting hygiene, increasing the risk of the Covid-19 outbreak.
After getting off the ferry, the passengers are rushing to their respective destinations in different vehicles with 3-4 times extra fare. Many have fallen ill in the scorching heat.
Shimulia Ghat traffic police inspector Md. Zakir Hossain said the pressure of passengers and vehicles heading towards Dhaka has increased.
A few vehicles are waiting at the ghat. Southwest passenger pressure is low. However, there are a lot of vehicles waiting at Banglabazar Ghat. The ferries coming from there have a lot of passenger pressure, BIWTC Shimulia ghat deputy general manager Md. Shafiqul Islam.
