Papul`s JS seat declared vacant

Jatiya Sangsad (JS) on Monday announced the parliamentary constituency Lakshimipur-2 vacant following the conviction of lawmaker Mohammad Shahid Islam alias Papul in Kuwait.

Parliament Secretariat issued a gazette this afternoon in this regard, signed by Zafar Ahmed Khan, senior secretary of Parliament Secretariat.

The gazette is in effect from January 28, 2021.

The gazette stated that Papul has been sentenced to four years' rigorous imprisonment for moral turpitude by a Kuwait court on January 28 this year.

For this reason, he is not eligible to be a Member of Parliament as per Article 66 (2) (d) of the Constitution of Bangladesh.

That is why his seat has become vacant from the date of pronouncement of the verdict as per Article 67 (1) (d) of the constitution.

Earlier, JS Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury discussed the matter with the concerned. At that time, the copy of the verdict of Papul's case sent from Kuwait was reviewed.

This is the first time in the history of Bangladesh that an MP has lost his post after being detained abroad and convicted of a criminal offense.
