A rare species of fish have been caught in a fishing net at Satkania in Chattogram. When the news spread, the locals flocked there to see the fish. The name of the fish is ‘Sucker Fish’, many also called this ‘Suckermouth Cat Fish’.
The fish was caught in the Hatiarkul area of the Sonakania union of the upazila on Thursday morning. Fisherman Joynal, a resident of the area, said “it weighed 100 grams”.
Joynal said the fish has round and striped spots all over its body. The body is covered by small fishbones. There are three more large fishbones on the back and both sides. The fish has sharp teeth. The fish is currently in the custody of Ziabul, a fish farmer in the same area.
When asked about the fish, Akhter Kamal, a biology teacher at B.G Sener Hat High School, said the fish’s name was Suckermouth – it is also known as Sucker Fish or Suckermouth Cat Fish. It is a freshwater fish. It is widespread in Costa Rica, Panama and South America. However, it has also entered South Asian countries. Many people are not familiar with the fish as it is not native to us, he added.
