Pakistani directs TV channels not to air ‘hug scenes’

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority this week directed television channels to refrain from airing “hug scenes” in drama serials, saying content being shown on Pakistani satellite channels was against Islamic teachings and Pakistani culture.

PEMRA has in the past banned soaps for showing “content against our social and religious norms.” Pakistan has also banned social media apps such as TikTok for allowing what it deems is indecent content.

“All satellite TV channels are hereby directed to refrain from airing caress/hug scenes in dramas and properly review the content of the dramas,” a PEMRA notification said, adding that the scenes of intimacy were “distressing” for viewers and were being “glamorized in utter disregard for Islamic teachings and culture of Pakistani society.”

Last year PEMRA banned at least three TV dramas as well as the web serial Churails over indecency claims.

Although Pakistan’s film industry has been in decline for decades now, its TV dramas and serials are celebrated for their sophisticated scripts and nuanced depictions of family and societal strife.
