Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said that the work of the Padma bridge has progressed 84 percent. 

He said, “The financial progress of the bridge is 75.84 percent and the overall progress of the project is 74 percent. In addition, the Padma Bridge will be completed by June 2021.”

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader told reporters at the Visitor’s Center of Padma Bridge’s service area-1 at around 12:45 pm on Thursday. 

He said that the pile driving of all the pilar on the main bridge was finished. Of the 45 pillars, 32 have been completed. So far, there have been 31 spans from China to Mawa. Of them, 14 spans have been installed.  

“Construction on the Pillar 23 and 24 is underway at the end of the 15th Span at Jajira Point. In addition, there are 4 spans are in construction yards and 10 spans are in Padma Char area waiting to be installed.”  

The minister said the railway slabs would require a total of 2,959 pre-cast slabs. Of this, the construction of 2,891 slabs has been completed. “The remaining slabs will be finished by the end of November.”

Already 361 railway slabs have installed. Viaduct’s Piling Pilar Cap is finished on the Mawa and Jajira ends. Work is currently underway to construct girder and railway slabs. A total of 438 Super T-Girders will be required for Viaduct in Mawa and Jajira. Out of which, 155 girders have been completed, said Obaidul Quader. 

In addition, 56 have been set up on the Jajira point. For the railway viaduct, a total of 84 I girders have been completed. Of them, 42 have been set up in Jajira. The contract value of the work of the main bridge is Tk 12,133.39 crore. Of this, Tk 9201.93 crore cost. 

The real progress of river governance is 63 percent and financial progress is 50.40 percent. Of the total 14 km river governance work, 6.60 km has been completed. The contractual value of the river governance work is Tk 8707.81 crore and the expenditure so far is Tk 4388.46 crore, he said. 

“Hundred percent work of the link road is completed. The overall progress of the project is 75 percent. The bridge will be completed by June 2021.” 

Mentioning that a dairy farm will be built for the army in fallow lands in the land acquired for the Padma bridge, the minister said, “There is a piece of land in the bridge project that will not be used for the bridge project. A dairy farm would be built for the army. There will be milk and meat production.” 

Cattle breeding and breeding will be developed. This will create employment. The national economy will play a role in GDP, Bridges Minister added.
