PM to attend D-8 summit virtually today

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to attend the last day of the 10th four-day summit of the Alliance of Developing Countries D-8. She will take part in the conference virtually at 3:00 pm.
This year’s conference is being organized by Bangladesh on a virtual platform. Besides presiding over the 10th Summit, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is leading the Bangladesh delegation.
Heads of state or government of the member countries will address the conference with the theme “Partnership for a Transformative World: Harnessing the Power of Youth and Technology”.
Apart from Bangladesh, other countries in the alliance are Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey. At the summit, Bangladesh will take over the presidency from the current president, Turkey, for a term of two years.
The 10th D-8 Summit is expected to be an announcement and a ten-year (2020-2030) roadmap. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will hand over the chairmanship of the D-8 summit to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
D-8 was established in 1997 to promote economic and development cooperation among the eight-member states. The D-8 Secretariat is located in Istanbul.
The D-8 objectives include improving the position of developing countries in the global economy, diversifying new opportunities in trade relations and increasing participation in decision-making at the international level.
Priority areas for cooperation in D-8 include trade, industry, agriculture and food security, energy, transportation and tourism.
