Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today has laid the foundation stone of a 4.8-km long double-line dual-gauge dedicated Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Railway Bridge involving Tk 16,781 crore over the Jamuna River.

Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of the 4.8-km long railway through a video conference on Sunday morning.

According to project sources, the new bridge will be constructed a few hundred yards north of the Bangabandhu Multipurpose Bridge. Although the duration of the project has been fixed till 2023, the period of the revised project has been extended by two years till December 2025. The length of the bridge is 4.8 km. However, the railway authorities are considering the length of the bridge to be 9.60 km as it is a double line.

The project cost was initially Tk 9,734 crore but it has been extended to Tk 16,780 crore. Of this, JICA is providing Tk 12,149 crore and The government is financing the rest. In the meantime, 431 acres of land has been acquired from Bangladesh Bridge Authority.

It is learned that 44 trains run daily on Bangabandhu Bridge. As it is a single line, a lot of time is wasted on traffic signals to cross the bridge. Heavy freight trains cannot run due to weight constraints. Even the train cannot run at full speed on this bridge.

The concerned people hope that this problem will be solved once the construction of the new dual gauge bridge is completed. There will also be a lot of development of the western rail communication system with the capital.

When asked, project director engineer Kamrul Ahsan told Daily Bangladesh that the site has already been explained to the contractor. Engineers of the concerned organizations have also started coming. “The main bridge will be constructed under two packages. The construction of the bridge is expected to be completed in December 2025,” he added.

It is learned that if the Bangabandhu Railway Bridge is implemented, new milestones will be created in terms of communication infrastructure with China, Myanmar, India, Bhutan, Nepal and other countries.

Two trains will be able to run on the bridge side by side at a speed of at least 100 kmph. Rapid implementation of rail connectivity will facilitate communication between the eastern part and the western part of the country and will further improve the socio-economic condition.

Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan said the foundation stone of the double line dual gauge railway bridge is going to be laid as part of the Prime Minister’s far-reaching plan. When this bridge is opened, two trains will be able to run at high speed. Through this, it will be possible to transport all kinds of goods including containers, he added.
