Approval of the draft law on ‘Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Act 2000’ will be issued in the form of an ordinance on Tuesday with the provision of the death penalty as the maximum punishment for rape.

The information was given by Law Minister Anisul Haq after the Cabinet gave its final approval to the draft law on Monday.

The draft will be issued Tuesday in the form of an ordinance. That means it will become law from that day. Before that, it will have legal verification (vetting),” he said.

According to law ministry sources, the President will issue it in the form of an ordinance as there is no session of the Jatiya Sangsad at the moment.

“The maximum punishment for rape, under the existing law, is life imprisonment, now it has been made death penalty or life imprisonment,” Law Minister Anisul Haq said.

After the recent video of a woman being tortured in Noakhali went viral on Facebook, as a result, there was a storm of anti-rape movement across the country, including the capital. Various programs including human chain, procession have been going on for the last seven days.
