Onions coming from 11 countries by sea

One lakh 38 thousand 965 tons of onions are coming from 11 countries to Chittagong port within the stoppage of onion export of India. In contrast, the Chattoram Seaport Plant Quarantine Center has issued 305 import permits.
The countries selected for import are China, Myanmar, Pakistan, India, Egypt, Turkey, Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, Ukraine, and Malaysia.
Asaduzzaman Bulbul, deputy director of the Plant Quarantine Center, said 13 new import permits had been issued on Thursday. In all, 305 permits have been issued since September 3. In contrast, one lakh 38 thousand 965 tons of onion will come to the country. Among them is a consignment of 200 tonnes from India, which was approved by an importer on Wednesday.
He added that since India stopped exporting onions, traders have been looking into importing from new countries. Permits are being issued within a short time after receiving their application so that imports can be made quickly.
It is learned that traders have already started the process of importing onions from alternative countries after anticipating a halt in India's exports.
