The prices of onions have started to shoot up as the cooking staple spice has witnessed a price surge of up to Tk10 a kilogram in the retail market of Dhaka just within a night of the Indian government announcement on Monday banning exports of all types of onions to Bangladesh.
This scenario has been notified of some retail markets in the capital's Mirpur on Monday night.
The traders said that since the evening, a large number of buyers have flocked to the shops to buy onions, however, in some shops, the buyers had to return without getting onions.
Mohammad Shahid, owner of Taj General Store in Shewrapara, Mirpur, said that although there were no buyers of onions since the afternoon, the sale of onions has increased since the evening. The onions are being sold here at tk 65 to 70.
On the other hand, the retailers said that they have to sell at higher prices as it increased in the wholesale market. If the price goes down in the wholesale market, they will also reduce the price of onion. However, there is no possibility of price reduction at the moment.
