Onion price hikes again

Onion price hikes again

The price of onion has started to rise again up in the different markets in the Capital due to syndicates of wholesalers on the pretext of floods. Even a week ago, 5 kg onions were sold at Tk 150 to 175 at wholesale rate, now the same amount of onions is being sold at Tk300 to Tk320.

Visiting several markets including Mirpur, Kawran Bazar, Gabtali, and Abdullahpur in the capital it has been seen that onions are being sold at the doubled price compared to last three days. All types of onions are now being sold in the retail markets at one and a half times higher prices.

Traders claim that onions are not being imported from India due to coronavirus. Besides, the flood is another cause of the increase of price in local markets.

Zahirul Islam, a shopkeeper at Kachukhet Bazar in Mirpur-14, told Daily Bangladesh this afternoon that local onions are being sold at Tk 65 per kg at retail. It was also sold at Tk60 per kg in the morning. He said that he had sold the same quality onions at Tk 35 to Tk 44 per kg even three days ago.

The traders also said that they are selling imported onions at Tk 50, which was Tk 30 a few days ago. As a result, the price of onion has increased more than one and a half times.

Jalal Ahmed, an onion importer told Daily Bangladesh, they have to pay Tk 35 to import and bring onions at Healy port from India. Earlier, which was Tk 18 to Tk20 per kg. The price of old onions has gone up in the market due to the loss of new season onions in India which also affects our local markets price hike.

The scenario of Mohakhali, Mirpur, Uttara, Rampura, and other markets of the capital is also the same. At retail, local onions are sold at Tk60-65 and imported Indian onions at Tk45 to Tk50. Three days ago, local onions were sold at Tk 35 to Tk 40 per kg and Indian onions at Tk25 to 30 per kg.

Lokman Haider, a private official who came to shop at Kusal Center in the capital's Uttara, said that on the one hand, the corona situation has reduced the salary by 10 percent. Then again the price of vegetables in the market is increasing day by day. Staying in Dhaka City in such a situation has become very difficult.
