In the volatile situation of onion in the country's market, a few thousand metric tons of onion are coming to the country from Turkey at the rate of 1 lira or 12 rupees per kg.
It is learned that about 57,000 metric tons of onions are coming from China, Turkey, Egypt and Myanmar through the Chittagong seaport. These onions can actually be sold in the market at a price of Tk 40 per kg, the importers said.
Meanwhile, after the ban on onion exports by India, the price of Indian onion in Khatunganj increased by Tk 25 to 30 per kg. Mohammad Hasanuzzaman, assistant director of the National Consumer Affairs Department, said onion prices had risen not because of the crisis but because of a syndicate of 50 port-based importers.
In the last three months, 1,082 metric tons of onions have been imported through the Chittagong seaport. Within the next one week, 57,000 metric tons of onions imported from China, Turkey and Egypt are coming through this seaport, said the Deputy Director of Chittagong Seaport Dr. Mohammad Asaduzzaman Bulbul. These onions can actually be sold in the market at a price of Tk 40 per kg, said, concerned importers.
Meanwhile, on the news of stopping onion exports from India, the prices of all kinds of onions suddenly went up in different places including Khatunganj. The Department of Consumer Rights has started a campaign to control the onion market from September 16.
