Noakhali rape case: Two get life term

A Noakhali court has sentenced two accused to life term imprisonment for raping a 36-year-old woman in Joykrunchpur village of Eklashpur UP in Noakhali's Begumganj. 

Each of the accused was also fined Tk 50,000, in default of which he will have to serve three more months in jail. 

Judge Joynal Abedin of Noakhali Women and Child Abuse Suppression Tribunal-1 handed down the verdict in the presence of the accused around 11:00 am on Monday. Advocate Mamunur Rashid Lablu ‍stood for the state while Advocate Mollah Habibur Rasul Mamun represented the plaintiff and Advocate Jasim Uddin Badal for the accused.  

The convicts sentenced to life imprisonment are - Delwar Hossain alias Delu, the chief of notorious Delwar Bahini, and his accomplice Abul Kalam. They are residents of Eklashpur UP in Begumganj upazila. 

On October 6 last year, the assaulted woman filed the case against Delwar and his associate Abul Kalam at Begumganj Model Police Station under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act. 

It has been reported that Delwar has violated the victim several times at gun point. 

According to the case statement, Delwar and Kalam swooped on the victim's house in Begumganj Upazila around 11:00 am on Oct 5, 2019. Later, he raped the victim after threatening her with gang rape. Delwar raped the victim again on April 7, 2020. 

Later on September 2, members of the Delwar Bahini entered the woman's house and tied her husband up. They tortured the housewife after undressing her and captured it on phone. The incident came to light after the video of it went viral on the internet.
