The High Court today suspended the suspension order issued by the local deputy commissioner on stone extraction at Bholaganj of Kompaniganj in Sylhet. The lawyers said that there was no obstacle in the extraction of stones in Bholaganj.

The High Court bench of Justice Khairul Alam and Justice JBM Hasan passed the order following a hearing of a writ petition on Sunday.

Lawyer Habib Un Nabi stood for the petitioners before the court. He said the local deputy commissioner had issued a letter on February 11, 2020 banning stone extraction in Bholaganj on the pretext of lack of provisions in the Mining and Mineral Resources Rules 2012 and tourism. As a result, about 10 lakh local workers became unemployed. But some people had been collecting extortion illegally for a long time.

Therefore, the East Islampur Hammer Workers Cooperative Society filed a writ petition in the High Court last December challenging the validity of the ban. Following the hearing of the writ petition, the High Court stayed the proceedings of the stay order issued by the local deputy commissioner.
