New onion in the market for Tk 60

Farmers started harvesting new onion across the country to get better prices. In the wholesale market, old onions are sold for Tk 170, but new leafy onions are being sold at Tk 60 only.

Visiting capital's Karwan Bazar on Friday our correspondent reported that new onion has started to come from different parts of the country. This onion is being sold for Tk 60 to 70 in the wholesale market and Tk 80 to 90 in the retail market. Old onions are still being sold at higher prices. Onions from Egypt, China and Myanmar is being sold for Tk 110, Tk 100 and Tk 160 respectively. Local old onion is being sold for Tk 170.

Stockist of Gaussia Bhandar at Karwan Bazar Mostafa told Daily Bangladesh that new onion have started coming from several places including Pabna, Manikganj. This onion is being sold for Tk 60 per kg.

Belal Hossain, the owner of Laxam Brothers, said that the price of preserved onion is not falling until the mature new onion comes into the market. As the new leafy onion starts to come into the market, prices have dropped a bit. More to come soon.

He said that onion is now being sold in the market, which is not reserv able. It should be used in two to three days. It may take a few more days for the onion to come to the market. However, the local onion has started to grow in some local places of the country, he said.
