The existence of a new variant of coronavirus has been found in Bangladesh similar to that of the United Kingdom (UK), according to the genomic research laboratory of Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR).
BCSIR Principal Scientific Officer Dr Md Salim Khan confirmed the matter on Thursday.
Scientists at BCSIR observed new mutations in novel coronavirus strains in the country after the genomic sequencing analysis conducted in early November. BCSIR conducted the analysis on five different samples of coronavirus and found mutations in the virus similar to that discovered in the UK.
"We observed that one new strain was almost similar to the one found in the United Kingdom, though it was not 100 percent same. We will start working on it again," Dr Selim Khan, principle scientific officer of the BCSIR, told media this morning.
