The Cabinet approved the proposal to observe the National Historical Day on March 7, the day Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman called for the independence of Bengalis in 1971.
The proposal was approved at a Cabinet meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through video conferencing from Ganobhaban, held at the Secretariat on Monday
Later, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam informed in a press briefing, saying “the cabinet had approved the proposal to declare March 7 every year as National Historic Day and to include it in the ‘Ka’ sequence of the circular issued by the Cabinet Division to celebrate the day.”
Earlier, the High Court bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahsan and Justice KM Kamrul Quader declared March 7 as the National Day and directed to issue a gazette. Dr. Bashir Ahmed heard for the writ and Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Abdullah Al Mahmoud Bashar represented the state.
Bashir Ahmed told reporters that the High Court had declared March 7 as National Historic Day and directed to publish a gazette and submit a report within the next month. As a result of this order, March 7 was recognized as the National Historic Day. “Now the task of the administration will be to issue a gazette within the next one month and through that gazette to observe the day nationally and statewide in the future,” he added.
