National Girl Child Day today

National Girl Child Day is being observed on Wednesday. The day will be celebrated in the country through various arrangements and formalities. There will be calls like “Girls should not be discriminated”, “they should be protected from abuse”, etc through various formalities.
This year’s theme is “We are all vocal, the world will be equal”.
The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs has taken various programs on the occasion of the day. Local administrations in different parts of the country also observe the day.
The Department of Women Affairs has directed the deputy directors to observe the day in coordination with the local administration in every upazila of the country.
This day was first observed on October 11, 2012, to eradicate gender inequality around the world. The member states of the United Nations observe this day every year. However, different countries celebrate the day on different days. This year, the day is being celebrated on September 30 in Bangladesh
The day was started with the aim of playing an effective role in ensuring girls’ right to education, nutrition, legal aid and justice, medical facilities and protection from discrimination, violence against women and prevention of forced child marriage.
Canada first proposed the International Girl Child Day at the United Nations General Assembly. The resolution was later adopted at the UN General Assembly on December 19, 2011. Later, the first International Girl Child Day was celebrated on October 11, 2012, with the theme “Stop Child Marriage”.
According to official data, the theme of this year’s International Girl Child Day is – “Building the world anew with child for child”. The theme of National Girl Child Day in Bangladesh is “We are all vocal, the world will be equal”.
Meanwhile, on the occasion of International Girl Child Day and Child Rights Week, various programs have been taken across the country including Bangladesh Shishu Academy in Dhaka.
This includes a week-long online program on child protection, development and advancement from October 5 to October 11. Hygiene will be strictly followed at all events of Child Rights Week considering the health risks due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation.
Besides, National Girl Child Day has been celebrating at the district and upazila level on September 30. However, National Girl Child Day will be celebrated on October 8 in Dhaka in coordination with World Children’s Day and Child Rights Week.
