Rafael Nadal has been knocked out of the Australian Open after a stunning defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas in a classic five-set match on Wednesday night, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Tsitsipas defeated Nadal in a four-hour marathon on Rod Laver Arena.
The 22-year-old Greek has become only the third player to beat Nadal from two sets down, along with Roger Federer and Fabio Fognini.
With this victory Tsitsipas puts himself on third grand slam semi final and second straight as he will play Daniil Medvedev for a spot in his first grand slam final on Friday night.
"I have no words to describe what went on the court. It’s an unbelievable feeling to play at such a level. I started very nervously, I don’t know what happened after the third set, I flew like a little bird. Everything worked. The emotions are indescribable. I focused on staying calm and holding my nerves. I would also give part of my victory by being calm with my mood. I have been working on trying to keep emotions to myself.
[On Medvedev] He plays really well, has a lot of consecutive wins. I need to review, and do an ice bath. I am really looking forward to playing this match," Stefanos Tsitsipas spoke after winning the match.
