Fareed Ahmad, the left-arm pacer, has been included in Afghanistan's T20 World Cup squad with a series of changes made. Less than 20 minutes after the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced their initial squad for the tournament, Rashid Khan decided to step down as captain over team selection.

"As the captain and responsible person for the nation, I deserve the right to be part of the selection of the team. The selection committee and ACB has not obtained my consent for the team which has been announced by ACB media. I am taking the decision of stepping down from the role as captain of the Afghanistan T20 side effective immediately," Rashid had said then.

Mohammad Nabi will now lead the side with Sharafuddin Ashraf and Dawlat Zadran now part of the reserves while Shapoor Zadran and Qais Ahmad have been axed. Samiullah Shinwari and pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi have also been named in the reserves. Nabi comes back for another stint as captain after leading the side between 2013 and 2015. Mohammad Shahzad, Afghanistan's swashbuckling keeper-batsman, has been brought back from the cold after his one-year ban for breaching ACB's code of conduct ended last August.

Afghanistan start their Super 12 campaign against the top qualifier from Group B on October 25. They then play Pakistan, the second qualifying team from Group A, India and New Zealand to try and find a place in the semifinals.
