China has assured Bangladesh that it would take initiatives to arrange a second round of foreign ministerial level ‘tripartite talks’ among Dhaka, Beijing, and Naypyidaw over Rohingya repatriation after next month’s Myanmar general elections.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi made the assurance in a telephonic conversation with his Bangladesh counterpart Dr. AK Abdul Momen on Thursday evening, a foreign ministry press release said today.

After the Myanmar polls, the Chinese foreign minister suggested holding an ambassador level talk first before arranging the foreign ministers’ tripartite meeting over commencing the Rohingya repatriation.

Wang conveyed to Bangladesh foreign minister Dr. Momen that Myanmar recently reassured China of taking back the forcibly displaced Rohingyas from Bangladesh once the Covid-19 situation improves.

The envoy said China has been maintaining regular communication with Myanmar at various levels over the Rohingya repatriation issue while Naypyidaw assured Beijing that they would start discussions with Bangladesh soon in this regard.

The Chinese ambassador also laid emphasis on starting tripartite senior-level official preparatory talks in Dhaka soon over the Rohingya repatriation.

The first such tripartite meeting among the foreign ministers of Bangladesh, China and Myanmar was held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York last year.

Wang also told Foreign Minister Dr Abdul Momen that Bangladesh would get China's corona vaccine on priority basis once it get approval. The Chinese Foreign Minister also mentioned that China is interested in working with Bangladesh for economic recovery in the near future.

Wang Yi praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's leadership in dealing with Coronavirus.

Regarding the renewal of visas for Bangladeshi students and researchers studying in China who are now stranded in Bangladesh due to corona. Wang Yi said that the Chinese government has not yet decided on the entry of foreign students into their country. However, he assured that Bangladeshis would be put on the priority list if a decision is taken in this regard.

Wang Yi said the Chinese government is confident that Bangladesh will ensure justice for the killing of a Chinese citizen in Pirojpur and that it will ensure the safety of all Chinese nationals working in Bangladesh.

In response, Momen said Bangladesh police have already arrested two accused in the killing of the Chinese national and that their trial will be completed at the soonest.

He thanked the Chinese government for the initiative of translating in Chinese the book "Amar Dekha Naya Chin [The New China I Saw]" written by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
