The International Cricket Council (ICC) has been awarding the best cricketer of the month every year since this year. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim has bagged the top three places in the race to become the best cricketer in May. As the first Bangladeshi cricketer, he got a place in the shortlist of the best players of the month.
The ICC on Tuesday released a shortlist of “Player of the Month” for May based on performance. Apart from Mushfiqur, the other two cricketers on the list are Pakistan’s young medium pacer Hasan Ali and Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama.
Mushfiqur placed in the list with 237 runs at an average of 79 in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in May. In this series, he has played innings of 84, 125 and 38 runs respectively. His innings were impeccable in the face of team disaster. Mushfiqur’s bat helped Bangladesh win the ODI series against the Lankans for the first time.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Hasan Ali has placed in the list with a great performance in the Test series against Zimbabwe. The right-arm pacer has taken 14 wickets in two matches.
On the other hand, Jayawickrama caught the eye of the ICC in his debut match. He helped the Lankans win the Test series against Bangladesh by taking 11 wickets in just one match.
Out of these three – the top, second and third place will be decided by voting.
