The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected the bail petition of Abdul Baset, sentenced to life imprisonment in the 1994 Safura Khatun murder case in Gobindpur village of Kotwali police station in Dinajpur. However, the country’s top court forgave the delay and allowed him to appeal (leave appeal).
The Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order on Thursday.
SM Shahjahan was present for the accused in the court. On the other hand, Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath represented the state.
Biswajit Debnath told reporters that Safura Khatun’s body was recovered on July 30, 1994, after she had been missing for several days. A letter was recovered from her at the time. The court completed the trial of the case based on the Dying Declaration.
Apart from Baset, the brother-in-law Sohra was also sentenced to life imprisonment by the lower court. After appealing against the verdict, the High Court upheld the sentence.
Later, Baset sought bail with ‘Leave to Appeal’. The court on Thursday forgave the delay and directed him to appeal regularly by dismissing the bail petition.
