AL-backed runners win 46 out of 60

The ruling Awami League-nominated candidates achieved victory in 46 municipalities out of 60, the second phase of voting in 60 municipalities held yesterday, while BNP-nominated candidates won in four municipalities. However, the candidates of Jatiya Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) won in one municipality respectively including an independent candidate got victory in one. And five Awami League 'rebels' and one 'rebel' candidate of the BNP have been elected while the result of a municipal poll had been postponed.
These results were obtained unofficially from the offices of the Returning Officers of the concerned areas on Saturday night.
With 10,738 votes Abdul Quader Mirza, the younger brother of Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, has been elected mayor of Basurhat municipality in Noakhali. Awami League candidate Abdul Quader Mirza got 10,738 votes, BNP candidate Kamal Uddin Chowdhury got 1,738 votes and Jamaat-backed independent candidate Maulana Mosharraf Hossain got 1,451 votes. It is reported that for the first time in Basurhat municipality of Noakhali the voters were seen standing in long lines to cast their votes using EVM. The voting started at 8 am on Saturday in the presence of a large number of voters and continued uninterruptedly till 4 pm. With the victory M. Mirza became the mayor for the third time in a row for the Basurhat municipality in Noakhali.
Awami League-backed Hasina Gazi has been elected unopposed in Narayanganj's Tarab municipality.
Awami League candidate AKM Ataur Rahman Khan has won the Kankonhat municipality election in Rajshahi with 5,583 votes as his nearest rival BNP candidate Hafizur got 5,136 votes.
Awami League candidate Abdul Malek Mandal has been elected mayor of Bhabaniganj municipality in Bagmara of Rajshahi with 7,399 votes and his nearest rival, independent candidate SM Mamunur Rashid bagged 2,699 votes. However, Awami League's 'rebel' candidate Moktar Ali has won in Arani municipality.
Awami League candidate Ahmed Ali had become the mayor for the third time in the election of Gangni municipality of Meherpur with 9,450 votes yesterday. Ahmed Ali's nearest rival, incumbent Mayor Ashraful Islam got 2,651 votes. Besides, Asaduzzaman Bablu got 490 votes for Dhaner shish (sheaf of paddy -the BNP's electoral symbol) and Abu Huraira got 193 votes.
In the Manohardi municipality elections in Narsingdi AL-backed Mohammad Aminur Rashid has got the victory with 8,882 votes and the BNP candidate Mahmudul Haque got only 585 votes in the area.
For the second time in Moulvibazar's Kamalganj municipality elections AL candidate Jewel Ahmed has been elected as mayor with 5,257 votes, his rival candidate Helal Mia got 2,806 votes.
AL-backed Syed Hasan Sarwar has won the Kuliyarchar municipality elections in Kishoreganj with 12,943 votes and the BNP candidate Nurul Millat got 4,291 votes.
It is reported that BNP candidate Tofazzal Hossain has been elected mayor of Santahar municipality elections of Bogura's Adamdighi Upazila with bagging only 386 more votes than his nearest rival. Tofazzal received 7,788 votes while AL-backed Ashraful Islam got 7,402 votes.
BNP's 'rebel' candidate Jane Alam has been elected as the mayor of Sherpur municipality with 8,769 votes and his nearest rival Awami League candidate Abdus Sattar got 4,681 votes.
BNP candidate Syed Jahangir Alam has been elected mayor of Dinajpur municipality for the third time in a row with 44, 934 votes. His closest rival, the Awami League candidate Rashed Parvez got 24, 262 votes. In Birganj municipality, Awami League's 'rebel' candidate Md. Mosharraf Hossain was elected as mayor with more 47 votes than his nearest rival. Md. Mosharraf got 3,993 votes and the Awami League candidate Nur Islam got 3,946 votes.
In Birampur municipality elections, Akkas Ali, AL-backed, bagged 15,359 votes to achieve the victory and his nearest rival independent candidate Nuruzzaman Sarkar got 8,686 votes.
Another AL-backed runner Shawkat Hossain Bhuiyan kept the victory, elected unofficially, in Cumilla's Chandina municipality elections with 9,451 votes and his closest rival independent candidate Shamim Hossain got 3,155 votes.
Independent candidate Akhter Hossain was elected as the mayor of Sunamganj's Jagannathpur municipality with 8,378 votes while Awami League candidate Mizanur Rashid Bhuiyan got 8,018 votes.
AL-backed runner Sheikh Abdur Rahman won the Mongla Port municipality election in Bagerhat with12, 125 votes and his closest rival BNP candidate Zulfiqar Ali got only 592 votes.
With 9,176 votes in Netrokona's Kendua municipality elections, AL candidate Asadul Haque Bhuiyan confirmed the victory and his nearest rival BNP candidate Shafiqul Islam got 2,256 votes.
Awami League candidate Latifur Rahman has been elected in Mohanganj municipality elections with 9,455 votes and his nearest rival independent candidate Tahmina Parveen got 5,073 votes.
In Natore's Gopalpur municipality elections, AL mayoral candidate Rokhsana Mortaza won with 6,578 votes, her nearest rival independent candidate Munjurul Islam got 5,152 votes.
AL candidate Moniruzzaman has won in Naldanga municipality elections with 3,630 votes and his nearest rival BNP candidate Abbas Ali got 1,809 votes. Another Awami League candidate Shahnewaz Ali has been elected mayor of Natore's Gurudaspur municipality with 7,640 votes and his nearest rival rebel candidate Ariful Islam got 4,945 votes.
In the Boalmari municipality elections of Faridpur, AL candidate Selim Reza achieved the victory with 9, 239 votes and his nearest rival Awami League's 'rebel' candidate Liton Mridha got 3,888 votes. Another AL candidate Zahirul Islam has been elected in Bandarban's Lama municipality with 9,405 votes while his nearest rival BNP candidate got 1,062 votes.
BNP candidate Habibur Rahman achieved the victory in Madhabpur municipality elections of Habiganj with 5,031 votes in where his nearest rival AL's 'rebel' candidate Pankaj Kumar Saha got 4,185 votes. Another BNP candidate Chabir Ahmed Chowdhury received the victory in Nabiganj Municipality elections with 5,742 votes and his nearest rival Awami League candidate Golam Rasul Chowdhury got 5,485 votes.
Awami League candidate Ishahak Ali Malitha has been elected in Ishwardi municipality of Pabna with 26, 512 votes, his nearest rival BNP candidate Rafiqul Islam got only 2,170 votes.
Another AL - backed Mahbubul Alam has won Santhia municipality elections with 16,093 votes and his nearest rival BNP candidate Sirajul Islam got 5,070 votes. Faridpur Municipality Awami League candidate KM Kamruzzaman Majed won with 4,998 votes as his nearest rival BNP candidate Enamul Haque got 3,569 votes. AL candidate Golam Hasnain was elected unopposed in Bhangura municipality.
In the Nageshwari municipality elections of Kurigram AL's 'rebel' candidate Mohammad Hossain got the victory. AL-backed runner Khurshid Haider was elected mayor of Magura municipality with 39,046 votes as his nearest rival Iqbal Akhter Khan of the BNP got 6,073 votes. Awami League candidate Anisur Rahman was elected in Sreepur municipality of Gazipur with 23, 486 votes while nearest rival BNP candidate Kazi Khan got 10,096 votes.
AL candidate Abdullah Al Pathan has won in Raiganj municipality elections of Sirajganj with 8,920 votes as his nearest rival BNP candidate Jahidul Islam got 575 votes. Another AL-backed runner SM Nazrul Islam got the victory in the Ullapara municipality elections with 24,509 votes as his nearest rival BNP candidate Azad Hossain received only 1,133 votes.
Independent candidate Md. Sajjadul Haque won the Belkuchi municipality elections by getting 18,387 votes as his nearest rival Begum Ashanur of AL-backed got 12,784 votes. Abdul Hannan Talukder was elected unopposed in Kazipur municipality. And, incumbent mayor Awami League candidate Syed Abdur Rauf is on his way to victory in Sirajganj municipality.
In Kushtia's Bheramara municipality elections, JSD-backed candidate Anwarul Kabir won with 8,030 votes as his nearest rival Awami League candidate Shamimul Islam got 5,613 votes. AL's candidate Anwar Ali has won the elections in Kushtia municipality with 66,052 votes as his nearest rival BNP candidate Bashirul Alam got 14,613 votes.
Awami League's 'rebel' candidate Matlubar Rahman was elected with 12,398 votes in Gaibandha municipality elections while his nearest rival independent candidate Anwarul Sarwar got 7,970 votes. Jatiya Party's Abdur Rashid Reza Sarkar was elected in Sundarganj municipality with 2,704 votes as his nearest rival Abdullah-al-Mamun of the Awami League-backed runner got 2,558 votes.
Sipar Uddin Ahmed, AL candidate, got the victory in the elections of Kulaura municipality of Moulvibazar with 4,838 votes in where his nearest rival, independent candidate Shahjahan Mia got 4,685 votes.
Another Awami League candidate Parvez Rahman got victory in Shariatpur municipality elections with 23,214 votes as his nearest rival Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Tanvir Ahmed got 1,376 votes.
In the Feni's Daganbhuiyan municipality elections, AL-backed runner Omar Faruk was elected as well as another AL candidate Kazi Ashraful Alam Khan kept the victory in the Shailkupa municipality elections in Jhenaidah.
However, in Savar municipality elections, Awami League candidate Abdul Gani has been elected with 56,604 votes as his nearest rival BNP mayoral candidate Refat Ullah got 5,330 votes. Another AL candidate Habibur Rahman has been elected unopposed in Pirojpur municipality.
