Movie theaters open after 7 months

After a long seven months due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the movie theaters in the country opened on Friday.

“The permission has been given on the condition that at least half of the seats in the movie theaters should be left vacant, ensuring proper hygiene and social distance in the COVID-19 situation,” said Mir Akram Uddin Ahmed, Director-information and public relations officer of the Ministry of Information.

According to the Producers and Distributors Association, 24 movies are waiting for release. However, the directors and producers do not want to release new movies due to the COVID pandemic despite opening halls on October 16.

The only film applied for release on October 16 is ‘Sahosi Hero Alam’. As this is a C-grade film, the owners’ expectations are zero. Besides, no application was received for the release of new films for the next two weeks on October 23 and 30.

Movies are awaiting release include ‘Makeup’, ‘Jinn’, ‘Ustad’, ‘Bishwa Sundari’,  ‘Shoshurbari Zindabad 2’, ‘Bidrohi’, ‘Unapanchash Batas’, ‘Mission Extreme’, ‘Mission Extreme 2’, ‘Shan’, ‘Paran’, ‘Bikkhov’, ‘Casino’, ‘Ananda Osru’ etc.

Several movie theatres including Shyamoli Cineplex, Madhumita and Balaka in the capital are not opening today. However, it is learned that several cinema halls including Ananda, Chitramahal and Geet are opening. Besides, the movie will be shown on one of the seven screens of Jamuna Blockbuster Cinema from today. And all the branches of Star Cineplex will be relaunched from October 23.

An official directive was issued to shut down the movie theatres from March 18. The film-concerned have been appealing to the government to open movie theatres for several months. Despite getting permission, all theatres are not opening at the moment.
