State-owned mobile phone operator Teletalk will provide internet bandwidth to students of public and private universities at nominal prices. Such facilities are being provided to keep the online education activities going.
Students from all universities in the country using the BdREN platform run by the University Grants Commission (UGC) will get this facility. Currently, 42 public and 68 private universities are using the BdREN platform. Students will be able to participate in classes online through the Zoom app.
This facility will be available only for Tk 100 per month recharge. The recharged money will be credited to the mobile’s original account. This money can be spent on voice calls and data. Unused money will be added to the next recharge. However, this facility cannot be availed if you recharge below Tk 100 and do not have minimum data in the SIM.
About this, Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof. Kazi Shahidullah said the initiative to keep students online at the university level during the coronavirus period is very timely.
He thanked the Ministry of Education, the Department of Posts and Telecommunications, and Teletalk Bangladesh Limited for responding to the initiative to provide internet bandwidth at a nominal cost.
On July 21, BdREN sent a letter to all mobile operators including Teletalk Bangladesh Limited. In response to that call, Teletalk issued a letter of consent on August 28. As per the letter, the mobile operator said a large number of students will come under their network during online classes through this initiative.
