Former SP Babul Akhter has denied the charges and refused to give a confessional statement in the murder case of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu. The court later sent him to jail.
The court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Sarwar Jahan passed the order on Monday afternoon.
Earlier, he was taken to court around 11 am after a five-day remand.
Confirming the matter, AC (Prosecution) of the city police Kazi Shahabuddin Ahmed said the PBI had produced Babul Akhter in court to testify under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the Mitu murder case. He did not give a confessional statement there. The judge later ordered to send him to jail.
Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain filed a murder case against Babul Akter, making him the prime accused in the case, with the city’s Panchlaish police station on Wednesday afternoon. Apart from Babul Akhter, seven others were also charged in the case.
Shortly afterward, the PBI submitted the final report of Babul Akhter’s case, which was filed five years ago, to the court.
On the same day, the PBI produced Babul Akhter in court and asked for a seven-day remand. Following the hearing, the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Sarwar Jahan granted him a five-day remand.
On June 5, 2016, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, the wife of the then SP Babul Akter, was brutally shot and stabbed on the way to pick up her son from the school bus on OR Nizam Road near GEC junction in the city. Babul Akhter filed a murder case with the Panchlaish police station over the incident. The case was being investigated by the city DB police. Later in January last year, the PBI got the responsibility of investigating the case on the order of the court.
