Messi’s great goal not enough as Argentina draws 1-1 with Chile

Argentina faced Chile in the Group B match of the Copa America at 3 am Bangladesh time on Tuesday at Estádio Nilton Santos in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Lionel Scaloni’s disciples took the lead 1-0 in the first half with a great free-kick of captain Lionel Messi, however, could not take the advantage, as a result, the match was drawn 1-1 after digesting a goal from Chile in the second half.
Argentina played like destitute in the beginning. Nicolás González got an easy chance in the 18th minute but was caught by the goalkeeper. In the 31st minute of the match, Argentina got a free-kick outside the box of Chile after fouling Giovani Lo Celso and Messi’s great shot from the corner of the goal post touched the net. The Albiceleste went ahead 1-0.
A few minutes after this goal, Lautaro Martínez could not touch his feet as he got a pass very close to the goal post, resulting in the missing of an easy opportunity. Argentina went to the break with a 1-0 lead.
However, Eduardo Vargas of Chile equalized in the 58th minute of the 2nd half. In the 56th minute, Nicolás Tagliafico fouled Arturo Vidal inside the box. Chile applied for a penalty. Although the referee did not respond at first, VAR changed its mind. Chile got a penalty.
Vidal’s shot was blocked by goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. But there was no defender to clear the return ball. Eduardo Vargas took advantage of the opportunity. He wrapped the ball in the net of Argentina in the head and equalized the match 1-1.
Later, Messi’s Argentina could not return to the game. Although in 79 minutes, Nicolás González got a great opportunity to take the lead, however, he missed Messi’s great shot.
The blue-and-white jerseys could not send any ball in Chile’s net during five minutes extra time. As a result, Lionel Scaloni’s team left the field with a 1-1 draw on the last whistle of the referee. Messi had to be satisfied with the draw despite going ahead in the third match in a row.
