Lionel Messi can play Argentina's opening World Cup qualifier match next month because the statute of limitations has run out on the ban he was given during last year’s Copa America, the president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) said on Thursday.

Despite playing some friendly matches after the Copa America, Argentina has yet to play a competitive match. As a result, Messi did not have a chance to play in the World Cup qualifiers next month. However, with the lifting of the ban, the Barca star will now be able to play for Albiceleste.

Messi was banned for one game after being sent off in the Copa America third-place playoff against Chile and for levelling accusations of “corruption” at South American soccer chiefs.

Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), recently appealed against the ban on Messi. He claimed that the ban ended due to the postponement of the qualifying match against Ecuador that is scheduled to take place in Buenos Aires on October 8.

However, Claudio Tapia said he had consulted with the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) President Alejandro Dominguez, who “confirmed the statute of limitations had expired and that he (Messi) is able to play,” the AFA twitter said.

As a result, Messi is not barred from playing two matches against Ecuador and Bolivia in next month's World Cup qualifiers. The two matches were scheduled to take place last March but were not held due to Corona.

Messi left the field after receiving a red card in the third-place match of the last Copa America in Brazil. There was controversy over Argentine captain's red card in the 36th minute. Because the Chilean footballer pushed Messi several times directly from the front. Messi, on the other hand, just managed to resist the push. However, the referee caused controversy and showed red cards to both of them.

Messi was shown the red card after clashing with Gary Medel and afterwards, he alleged the tournament had been fixed in favour of the hosts Brazil, who beat Argentina in a controversial semi-final on their way to claiming the title.
