Lionel Messi and his former Barcelona team-mate Luis Suarez both found the back of the net on Thursday night in the World Cup Qualifiers to equal former Brazil legend Ronaldo's record for most goals scored for a South American national team in competitive matches.
The two Barcelona legends scored against Ecuador and Chile in the World Cup qualifiers last night as both in the limelight this time with their goals.
Brazilian great Ronaldo scored 39 goals in competitive matches during his international career and set a record for the highest number of successful strikes by a South American national in official fixtures.
With Messi and Suarez individual goals all three have now struck 39 times in such games while the 33-year-old scored from the penalty spot handing his side a 1-0 victory against Ecuador.
It has been reported that Suarez placed himself to be the first to equal the Brazil legend's haul courtesy of a first-half penalty in a controversial 2-1 win over Chile.
