Round and long eggplants of Lafa variety are now being cultivated in the fields of Ramnagar village in Gangni upazila of Meherpur district. Despite the losses in the cultivation of other crops, the farmers have regained their fortune in eggplant cultivation. After meeting the demand of the district eggplants are being exported to other parts of the country.

Farmer Zakir Hossain said I have spent Tk 30 to 40 thousand to cultivate eggplant on one bigha. I have started selling at Tk 50 per kg and now at  Tk 30 per kg. Now, I am selling eggplant for Tk 10,000 every other day. Eggplants worth Tk 2.5 lakh to Tk 3 lakh are sold every year.

Another farmer Helal has cultivated brinjal in 10 Katha land this year. He said so far eggplant has been sold for Tk 1 lakh 20 thousand. He is expecting to sell eggplant worth Tk 50 to 60 thousand more.

This time the farmers are very happy with the bumper yield of eggplant as well as the good price. Eggplant cultivation has brought new momentum to the land without being dependent only on paddy cultivation. The eggplant is being delivered to different districts of the country including Dhaka, Chattogram, and Barishal.

Gangni Upazila Agriculture Officer KM Shahabuddin said more than 100 farmers of the upazila are earning lakhs of takas every year by cultivating brinjal or eggplant.

District Agriculture Officer Swapan Kumar Khan said that this time the bumper crop of brinjal has been harvested. Farmers have planted eggplant in about 90 hectares of land exceeding the target.
