Non-toxic cabbages produced by farmers of Saharbati in Gangni upazila of Meherpur – which is famous for its vegetable stock, is being exported to Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan.

This year, 700 metric tons of cabbage have been exported to Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan from 75 acres of land of 45 farmers. More demand is being created as the quality is better. 1000 metric tons of cabbage will be supplied to these countries this year as a safe vegetable this season, according to exporters.

An exporter named Agro Fresh is collecting cabbage from the field with the help of the Agriculture Office. Farmers are making it suitable for export by wrapping it in a white paper. for this, the farmers are benefiting a lot by selling the cabbages directly from the field.

The farmers said they are giving cabbages as per the “bigha agreement”.  If it was sold in the country, it would have been sold for Tk 20,000-22,000, but they earned Tk 55,000 as these are going abroad.

“Exports were made to Malaysia and Singapore last year. Cabbage is also going to Taiwan this year. In Gangni Upazila, cabbage has been cultivated safely from 75 acres of land of 45 farmers contracted by the company this year,” said Rubel Ahmed, quality control manager at Agro Fresh.

Swapan Kumar Khan, deputy director of the District Agricultural Extension (DAE) department, said the DAE has always encouraged safe vegetable cultivation. It is possible to earn a lot of foreign exchange if we can create a safe vegetable market. This year, cabbage is being exported from Bangladesh to Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan as safe vegetables.

“When farmers produce their crops and do not get the price, they become a source of tears instead of laughter,” said Meherpur DC Md. Mansur Alam Khan, adding that the cabbage from the Saharbati field is being exported beyond the borders of the country today. This will encourage the farmers more.

The farmers of Meherpur district are expecting that not only cabbage but also other vegetables will go abroad in the future.
