The last night’s Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell’s 108 off 80 balls with Alex Carey (who also touched 106 for making an Australian record partnership for the sixth wicket), hitting just his second century in 113 matches, not only helped the Aussies to seal a 2-1 series win over England at Old Trafford but also made Maxwell quickest in terms of balls faced to reach 3,000 ODI runs.
For reaching the milestone Maxwell took 92 fewer balls, from the 2,440th ball of his career, than his nearest rival England’s Jos Buttler.
Against England in the third ODI in Manchester, Maxwell became just the sixth man to reach 3,000 ODI runs at a strike-rate exceeding 100 as he reached the mark with a remarkable strike-rate of 122.95.
"Every time you get a chance to play in this Australian team you take whatever role you're given," Maxwell said. "The really good thing is, even in the lockdown period, I was training with Finchy [Finch] and we were able to talk about my role and certain things.
"I just had so much clarity on what he expected of me in that role and I think that gave me really good clarity out there.
"I was able to take the game on with the clarity he gave me before the tournament started and was able to ride on that momentum as well. Just knowing I had the backing of him is awesome."
