The government has announced a one-week lockdown due to the rapid rise in coronavirus infections. And since the announcement of the lockdown – the prices of the mask have doubled! At the same time, the prices of sanitizers have also risen slightly.
Such images were seen on the first day of the lockdown on Monday in several markets, medicine stores at ‘Mask Market’ under the 2nd Buriganga Bridge in the capital, Nayabazar, Sadarghat and Lalbagh areas.
Although the prices of hand sanitizers have not increased much, the demand has increased. Besides, the sales of disinfectants, handwashes and medicines have also increased, said the vendors.
According to buyers, if the matter is not brought to the government notice immediately, some unscrupulous traders will “increase its price”.
When asked the mask-sanitizer vendors about the price of hiking, they said there are enough masks and sanitizers but they are buying at a “higher price, so they have to sell at a higher price”.
Some retailers in front of Sadarghat, Victoria Park, Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court said that the price of masks has “gone up in the wholesale market since the announcement of the lockdown”. So, the people have to buy with extra price.
Earlier, four pieces of masks were being sold at Tk 10, now “two pieces of masks” are being sold at Tk 10, they said.
The demand for masks is high so the price is also slightly higher, said Mansur Ali, a mask seller in the wholesale market under the 2nd Buriganga Bridge in the capital’s Babubazar. “We bought masks from the factory at a higher price so we have to sell at a higher price. However, the price of sanitizer has not increased that much,” he added.
A box of 50 masks costs Tk 140 to 150. Sanitizer small size Tk 40-50, and large size Tk 130 to 150, informed mask seller Mansur Ali.
