A man was sentenced to an eight-month jail term in South Korea for killing a lost dog, according to Yonhap news agency. The Seoul Western District Court on Wednesday condemned the man to eight months in prison.

The 28-year-old man, identified by his surname Jeong who worked at a local fried chicken restaurant, reportedly killed a lost dog in western Seoul in October last year, breaching the country's animal protection law. The dog was found severely injured in its head.

Prosecutors earlier demanded an 18-month prison term for Jeong.

In South Korea, this type of punishment for assaulting or killing an animal is not the first. Earlier in November last year, the same district court sentenced a South Korean man in his 30s to six months in prison for assaulting and killing a cat. Besides, the district court in Suwon, south of the capital Seoul, handed down a four-month jail term to a man in his 50s for murdering two cats over two days.
