Man accused in rape case killed in Noakhali gunfight

A young man named Mizanur Rahman, the main accused in a rape case, was killed in a gunfight with police in Senbagh Upazila of Noakhali.
Deceased Mizan, son of Ala Uddin was a resident of Naotala village in the district's Sonaimuri Upazila.
The incident took place in the Sonakandi area of the Upazila on Monday morning while a total of three policemen were injured.
Abdul Baten Mridha, Officer-in-Charge of Senbagh Police Station, said that Mizan, an accused in the rape case, was detained on Sunday afternoon. According to his confession, the police launched a drive along with him to detain other accused around 3:00 am on Monday.
At that time, when the police reached the Sonakandi area of the Upazila, Mizan's associates opened fire on the police and tried to snatch him.
Mizan's associates fled when the police fired back in self-defense and the police later rescued Mizan from the spot after he was shot. He was later taken to Noakhali General Hospital where the doctor declared him dead. The injured Senbagh police personnel are Rasul Mir, Piyas Sarkar, and Pipal were admitted to Senbagh Government Hospital.
Police recovered an LG, two rounds of ammunition, and a sharp knife from the spot. The body of the deceased was kept in the morgue of Noakhali General Hospital.
