Local government by-polls underway

The by-polls for general and various posts in several upazilas, municipalities, and unions of the country, including ward no. 44 of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) are underway.
The voting has started from 9:00 am on Saturday. Voting in DSCC will continue till 5:00 pm. The district council vote will be from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Voting is underway in 104 local government institutions including by-election in general ward number 44 of DSCC. Among them – Electronic Voting Machine (EVMs) is being taken in Chandpur and Joypurhat’s Kalai municipality elections.
The Election Commission (EC) has deployed law enforcement agencies in all constituencies to keep the election environment peaceful. Judicial magistrates have also been appointed.
Besides, a law and order monitoring cell, headed by the director-general of the National Identity Registration Division, has been formed. Top officials of the Public Security Division, Ministry of Home Affairs, Police Headquarters, BGB, RAB, Ansar and VDP, Armed Police Battalion are working in this cell. They are informing the EC about the law and order situation related to the election.
According to EC sources, by-elections are being held for 10 posts in different district councils and for the post of chairman of Charbhadrasan upazila in Faridpur.
Besides, general elections are being held in Chandpur municipality and in Kalai municipality of Joypurhat and Jagannathpur municipality of Sunamganj for the vacant post of mayor, councilor for five municipalities and for the general post of two unions and various vacant posts of 82 UPs.
