Lightning kills 11 in four districts

At least 11 people were killed in lightning strikes in Jamalpur, Chapainawabganj, Bagerhat and Netrokona on Friday afternoon. Six of the dead were reported from Jamalpur, three from Chapainawabganj and one from Netrokona.

In Jamalpur:  Six people were killed by lightning strikes in the district. Of them, three people were killed at Kalkihara village of Merurchar union in Bakshiganj upazila of the district. 

The deceased were identified as Harbadsha, son of Mofizal Haque of the village, Akija Begum, wife of Abdul Khaleq, and Khalilur Rahman, son of Kala Miah of Bhati Kalkahira village.

Munmun Jahan Liza, UNO of Bakshiganj, said Harbadsha was bathing in the river in the afternoon. Khalilur Rahman and Akija Begum were working outside the house. At this time it started raining in torrents. All three died by thunderbolts.

Besides, three people died in Melandha, Sarishabari, and Dewanganj upazila of the district.

In Chapainawabganj: Three people, including a mother and her son, were killed in lightning strikes in the district. The incident took place in Sundarpur and Charbagdanga unions of Sadar upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Annie Begum, wife of Rana Ali of Panchrashia village under Sundarpur union of Sadar upazila, and her son Nur Mohammad. The other is Yamin Arafat, son of Abdul Matin of Bakhar Ali village in Charbagdanga union of the same upazila.

Habibur Rahman, chairman of Sundarpur Union Parishad, said the mother and son went to pick mangoes near their house in the afternoon during storm. They died on the spot when lightning struck on them.

In Netrokona: A seven-year-old child named Ashamani was killed in a lightning strike at Bhabanipur village in Dhalamulgaon union of Purbadhala upazila of the district. A woman named Selina was injured at the time.

The deceased was identified as Ashamani, daughter of Abdul Ali of the village. The injured Selina is the wife of Motaleb of the same village.

UP chairman Omar Farooq confirmed the news.

In Bagerhat: A farmer was killed in a lightning strike at Buri Math area of North Rajapur in Rayenda union of Sharankhola upazila of the district.

The deceased was identified as Md. Abu Bakkar Khan, a farmer in Rajapur area and Son of Babul Khan. Bakkar Khan died while fetching cows from the field, said UP member Md. Ruhul Amin.
