BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir commented that a larger program will be given in the interest of free and fair elections. He mentioned that the level playing field was not yet created in the country and the arrest is continuing.

He said this at a press conference on the election and ongoing political situation in the press club on Saturday afternoon.

BNP Secretary-General said, “Though Prime Minister has promised to ensure not to arrest opposition leaders and activists after the announcement of the schedule, ‘this is going on’.”

“The EC is implementing the government’s indigo project at the time and the commission is not taking any steps to make the elections acceptable,” he said.

Fakhrul said, “All political parties of the Oikyafront are taking part in the elections to protect democracy, to bring back human rights, to uphold the constitution and to release other political leaders including Khaleda Zia.”

BNP Secretary-General also said, “After the announcement of the election schedule, arrests of leaders and activists are still being held in illegal and false cases. Even main candidates have been arrested.”

He urged, “Stop arresting the activists immediately. The people who have been arrested, they should be released and their cases should be withdrawn. Otherwise, this election will never be acceptable to the people.”

“We hope that after the press conference of Dr Kamal Hossain, arrests will be stopped. Otherwise, we will be forced to offer a wider program to make the election environment fair and acceptable,” BNP Secretary-General added.
